What do donuts, pizza, Rita’s ice, Frito Lay chips, t-shirts, a DJ, a seat-belt
convincer, walking a line or riding a tricycle obstacle course with beer
goggles, screening tools, an entire community of faculty, staff and local
police, four months of planning and over 700 students equal? A Stevenson
University National Alcohol Screening Day®
Event!
Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) has participated
successfully in NASD for eight years and has been recognized as the number one
screening site in 2007 and 2008. Our success is driven by the dedication of the
Wellness Center staff and the involvement of many volunteers from the entire
Stevenson community. The Center partners with the Baltimore County Health
Department, Baltimore County Police Department and various clubs and
departments in the University.
Our planning efforts are started in January, beginning with a T-shirt contest
sponsored by the Wellness Center and Art Department. Letters are sent
soliciting donations from community vendors. Our event, while occurring on one
day, is held three times: simultaneously at mid-day on our two campuses and
once in the evening. The key to receiving the help and donations required for
this large endeavor is early planning.
By conducting an NASD event, the University benefits from heavy participation
from students, staff and the community in general. This gives us a chance to
have conversations about alcohol education on both the campus and community
levels. Our goal is to use NASD as a primer for the development of a larger
campus awareness program.
