College Response: National Alcohol Screening Day: Screen
students at your college/university for alcohol problems and at-risk drinking.
1400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year of
alcohol-related unintentional injuries, and more than one in three college
students can be diagnosed with alcohol use disorders2.
In-person screening
In-person screening enables college/university health and counseling centers,
professors, student groups and other student affairs professionals the
opportunity to educate and screen students for alcohol problems and at-risk
drinking.
Different event kits are available for use in a variety of campus settings:
health fairs, residence halls and orientations. Similar to the community
program, most events are organized like a booth at a health fair with
brochures, screening forms, and giveaway items available at a table. People are
generally milling around asking questions, viewing the video, completing the
screening questionnaire and getting general information. Banners, posters,
balloons and food should be available to make the event more inviting. Colleges
provide the clinicians and administrative staff, secure the physical location
for the event, and promote and implement the program.
If you are interested in screening only students at your college or university,
register for the College Response: National
Alcohol Screening Day. If you are interested in screening both students
and members of your community, register for the college kit and call the NASD
office for supplemental materials designed for the general community
population.
College Response Online Year-Round Screening
Online education and screening offers students access to information and
anonymous screening from the privacy of their own computer 24 hours a day. The
online component provides an outlet for students throughout the academic year
to explore symptoms and seek help if indicated. Each college/university
customizes its online module with a referral message that directs students to
appropriate campus resources. Campus personnel can generate detailed
utilization reports and graphs. Please note: the online program is only
available in conjunction with an in-person screening event package.
