Bipolar Outreach

National Depression Screening Day has incorporated a new focus on manic-depression (bipolar disorder) into its traditional program. This new focus, under the scientific direction of Ross Baldessarini, MD, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Program at McLean Hospital, is designed to raise awareness of bipolar disorder and help those suffering from the illness find treatment.

The main facets of this new outreach include:

  • revised bipolar disorder questions on the NDSD screening questionnaire
  • educational materials focused on bipolar disorder in the screening kit
  • footage in the NDSD video featuring bipolar disorder patients
  • additional professional education for health professionals contained in the Procedure Manual and educational lecture

Currently, only a fraction of those with bipolar disorder receive appropriate treatment. It is hoped that this new outreach will focus attention on this underdiagnosed disorder and bring information and assistance to sufferers and their families.

National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) is October 10, 2002.
