As the academic year winds down, Screening for Mental Health® wants to share the
results of the 2008-2009 CollegeResponse program with you!
Designed to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health, alcohol use,
and eating disorders on campus, as well as to connect students with appropriate
treatment resources, over 170,000 student screenings were completed through
CollegeResponse’s screening events and online programs this past academic year.
To assist schools in promoting these valuable resources, we marketed the online
screenings, to students through Facebook. Each school that used our online
screening had a customized Facebook ad that helped advertise their online
screening and referral resources. Based on the success of these ads (During
National Depression Screening Day®, there was a 132% increase in the number of
students screened for depression) we will continue to use social marketing
vehicles such as Facebook to help colleges advertise their screenings and
services. Here are some program highlights:
National Depression Screening Day® (NDSD) – October 10th, 2008
-
588 colleges and universities registered to participate
-
58,167 screenings were completed through the NDSD online depression screening program.
-
53,882 screenings were completed through the NDSD online depression screening program
this academic year
-
53,882 screenings for Alcohol, 25,274 screenings for Bipolar
Disorder, 41,918 screenings for Generalized Anxiety Disorder,
and 11,768
screenings for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder were completed through the online
screening program.
-
For screenings completed through the online depression screening program, 81%
scored positive for symptoms consistent with depression.
National Eating Disorders Screening Program® (NEDSP)
February 22nd – 28th, 2009
-
454
sites registered for NEDSP this academic year – our highest registration ever
for this program
-
A projected 16,890 students were screened at in-person NEDSP
events, and 14.5%
were recommended for follow-up services
-
16,891
student screenings were completed through the NEDSP online screening program
-
For screenings completed through the online program, 63% scored
positive for symptoms consistent with an eating disorder, and 37%
indicated they would seek help
National Alcohol Screening Day® (NASD) – April 9th, 2009
-
476
sites registered for NASD 2009
-
12,564
student screenings were completed through the NASD online screening program.
-
For screenings completed through the online program, 61% scored
positive for symptoms consistent with drinking at levels considered either
hazardous/harmful or alcohol-dependent, and 43% indicated they
would seek help
*The screenings are self-assessments and not indicative of a
diagnosis. Due to the self-referred nature of the online screenings,
historically, we tend to see a larger percentage of positive scores than for
the in-person events.
