SOS: Why Participate?
Participate in the SOS Middle School Program to:

    • Proactively make efforts to decrease the incidence of undetected depression, self-injury, suicide attempts, and the number of middle school age youth who die by suicide
    • Increase the attitudes and knowledge among school staff, students, and their parents about suicide and depression and how they are related.
    • Encourage individual help-seeking and help-seeking on behalf of a friend
    • Address the risk factors for self-injury and suicide
    • Engage parents and school staff as partners in prevention
    • Partner with community-based mental health providers and other community stake holders to prevent youth suicide
    • Increase knowledge and confidence about accessing mental health services for at-risk youth and their families
    • Reduce stigma associated with mental health problems

SOS was developed with the assistance of an advisory board  of school staff and experts in the fields of suicide, self-injury, and child psychiatry.
