CollegeResponse® has been a success at schools screening for
eating disorders (NEDSP), alcohol use disorders (NASD),
and depression and mood disorders (NDSD).
CollegeResponse®: NDSD 2006
“This was our most successful NDSD yet at UCSD… We were able to reach a number
of students who would not have otherwise sought out our services. Many
commented that they’ve thought about making an appointment at our Psychological
& Counseling services, but now that they made a personal contact with a
psychologist, felt like they were much more likely to call. One student in
particular, whose suffered from PTSD for years, made such a good connection
with one of our therapists, that he scheduled his first appointment right there
at the screening event… even reaching one student and being able to offer
them help makes it all worth it!”
University of California, San Diego
“We had twice the amount of attendees as last year and there was a lot of
staff/faculty participation and support this year. One faculty member even used
NDSD for a writing reflection assignment and many others offered extra credit.”
Eastern Michigan University
“We recommended further evaluations for several students with whom immediately
came to the counseling center on campus and our now receiving on-going
services. Some students commented that because of NDSD, they are now more aware
of the services on the MSU campus.”
Missouri State University
CollegeResponse®: NEDSP 2007
“This year we chose to promote positive body image .. because poor body image
often precedes eating disorders and because a larger population of students
struggle with negative body image than disordered eating behaviors. The title
“Celebrate Your Body Day” was also chosen in an effort to attract and include
more male students in this screening event…CAPS staff members agreed that
significantly more male students (perhaps around 40% of the total) participated
in the body image activity this year!”
Indiana University
“When we do our screening program, we make screenings and dvd/videos available
not only for eating disorders, but also for anxiety, alcohol, bipolar disorder,
depression, AD/HD, and sleep disorders. The majority of our students take the
screens online and can then decide whether to access counseling services, but
at least have gotten some individual feedback re: their symptoms online. We
LOVE your program and materials. We’re sending the info on the Female Athlete
Triad, the Anorexia and Bulimia Primer and the excerise brochure to our women’s
sports coaches as outreach. Great materials!”
Milwaukee School of Engineering
CollegeResponse®: NASD 2007
“Some students were surprised at the level of their drinking after completing
the questionnaire and discussing the results with the screeners. They had not
considered that their level of use might be a problem before but afterwards,
they were interested in modifying their patterns of use to more responsible
levels.”
Howard University
“It’s a great non-threatening opportunity to have an “educational moment” with
young people who don’t usually want to discuss their drinking habits, or who
aren’t comfortable making a formal office appointment.”
Lasell College
“It’s a great way to hit upon a lot of students that may be high-risk.”
University of California, San Diego
“The on-site substance abuse counselor reported making several positive
interventions based on screening results. Members of the College’s Student Life
Committee, which sponsored the event, seemed to appreciate the opportunity to
interact with our students outside of classroom and office settings.”
