The award-winning SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program is designed to:
- Educate students on how to respond to the signs of suicide in themselves or a friend using the ACT® approach (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).
- Encourage students to discuss emotional issues with friends and parents.
- Teach students that suicide is preventable.
The SOS program is the only school-based suicide prevention program listed in Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices that addresses suicide risk and depression, while reducing suicide attempts.
New this year, the SOS program includes two interactive tools.
Plan, Prepare, Prevent: The SOS Online Gatekeeper Training
The SOS Online Gatekeeper Training Module is now live! This 90-minute interactive course provides in-depth suicide prevention education and helps professionals plan for implementation of the SOS Program. In addition, 1.5 Contact or Credit Hours are available for free for school nurses, social workers, counselors and psychologists.
“Training Trusted Adults” DVD
A valuable educational tool explaining the elements of the SOS program. This video is ideal for parent, community and staff trainings. It details the issue of depression and suicide among youth and emphasizes the important role parents and school personnel can play in helping at-risk students. Please view the trailer here.
The SOS program is available for middle and high schools serving children of military personnel in the U.S and overseas. Kits are available starting in October and priority is given to Department of Defense schools (DoDEA).
