Conduct Screenings: Success Stories

“This year’s event was our largest, by far, primarily due to the fact that we took this opportunity to screen the majority of the Fort Benning Soldiers who have recently returned from combat duty in Iraq. This was an excellent, non-threatening way to determine how many of our soldiers may be experiencing symptoms of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Deborah Manning/Yvonne Wilbanks
Fort Benning Army Substance Abuse Program

The event was a huge success. This year we had almost three times the numbers we’ve had in the past. The Psychology Club sponsored a showing of the video the week before, and the faculty encouraged students to participate. Student Health Services had peer educators distributing information, and the counseling services coordinated everything. This year we had significant student participation the day of the event.

“For the first time ever in Knoxville, TN, the MHA went to three homeless shelters in our community. With assistance of graduate students from the University of Tennessee’s College of Social Work, we screened 39 people. Thirty one of those screened were referred for treatment. We learned that this is a place in our community that we need to be and plan to be there next year!”

“The Spurwink School was part of a collaboration of mental health agencies in the southern Maine area who participated in the National Depression Screening Day. Working together we were able to better promote the event and conducted screenings in 12 different sites. It was a really valuable partnership.”

For the last two times we had done this, I have had students say how excited they were when a sign went up about NDSD. It gave them the “permission” they needed to possibly seek help. At Lyon, we try to make it very okay to come in to be screened (i.e. refreshments, comfortable place)

“We have been a part of NDSD for about six years and the last two years have provided us the opportunity to save the lives of several people who were very ill. It has been most gratifying.”

Susanne Baker

“Having the screening at the hospital provided an opportunity to educate the members about the prevalence of depression in patients with chronic medical conditions. Materials were of excellent utility.”

“We had Bev Cobain (cousin of rock musician Kurt Cobain) come to town and speak. She spoke at local schools, universities, at a large public program. We had events all week long. This produced great TV coverage and newspaper coverage. The night of Screening Day we had a local psychiatrist speak.”

“We used this to outreach in the community and reach people who may not otherwise access services.”
